The Elco EP-5 Electric Outboard is a compact 5 HP-equivalent electric boat motor designed for dinghies, small tenders, trailerable sailboats and other lightweight craft. Elco’s current specification lists 3.0 kW of continuous power, a 24 V nominal battery system and 98 lb of static thrust. The motor is available with tiller or remote control and short- or long-shaft configurations.
The product record currently published on Performance Engines contains the same core EP-5 specification family, including 5 HP, 3,000 W, 24 VDC, 125 A DC, brushless PMAC, 98 lb static thrust, water cooling and a 65 lb weight. It also identifies the motor as available with remote or tiller control and short- or long-shaft configurations. fileciteturn31file0L18-L20
Elco rates the EP-5 as comparable to a 5 HP gasoline outboard and gives it a 3–6 HP replacement range. Its current specification lists 3.0 kW continuous power, 98 lb static thrust and a maximum operating speed of 5,500 RPM.
The motor uses a brushless permanent-magnet AC (PMAC) design. Elco’s published technical material describes the motor as more than 90 percent efficient and designed to deliver consistent power throughout the speed range.
The EP-5 operates from a 24 V nominal battery system, with an operating range of 20–35 V. Maximum continuous battery current is 125 A, while Elco recommends approximately 90–150 Ah of battery capacity.
The 24 V architecture gives boat owners flexibility when selecting batteries. Elco currently lists a two-battery 12 V/110 Ah AGM package and a 24 V/100 Ah lithium iron phosphate option.
Battery capacity should be matched to the intended trip length, cruising speed, boat weight and operating conditions. A larger battery bank can provide more usable energy, but actual runtime and range vary with throttle position, hull design, displacement, current, wind, propeller and battery condition.
Elco’s current EP-5 configuration includes a Victron 12 V/110 Ah AGM two-battery package or a 24 V/100 Ah lithium iron phosphate battery option. Compatible chargers are offered for the respective battery chemistry.
Elco currently suggests the EP-5 for boats up to approximately 8 feet in length and approximately 350 lb in boat weight.
Elco also describes the EP-5 as suitable for dinghies and trailerable sailboats where power and portability are important.
Always verify the boat manufacturer’s maximum outboard rating, transom capacity and recommended shaft length before installation.
The EP-5 uses a brushless PMAC motor. This motor design eliminates conventional mechanical brushes and provides electric torque through the operating range. Elco’s technical material lists the motor as more than 90 percent efficient.
The result is a propulsion system without gasoline combustion at the motor, while the conventional outboard-style lower unit and propeller maintain a familiar installation format.
The EP-5 uses a water-cooled system. Elco’s technical documentation identifies water cooling as a measure that helps prevent overheating.
The motor also incorporates multiple electronic protection functions, including over-speed, overload, temperature, over-voltage and over-current protection.
The EP-5 is available with either tiller control or remote throttle control. Elco offers Livorsi side-mount and top-mount remote throttle packages, while a dual top-mount option is available for twin-powered systems. The current remote throttle packages include a 16-foot throttle cable, key switch and motor cut-off switch.
A tiller setup places the controls at the motor, while a remote configuration is appropriate for boats where the operator sits forward at a console or other control position.
The EP-5 is available in both short-shaft and long-shaft configurations. Elco currently recommends a long shaft when the boat’s transom is 15 inches or longer.
| Configuration | Specification |
|---|---|
| Short shaft transom height | 17.15 in |
| Short shaft overall | 41 × 11 × 18.5 in |
| Long shaft transom height | 22.15 in |
| Long shaft overall | 46 × 11 × 18.5 in |
These dimensions are also present in the Performance Engines product record. fileciteturn31file0L18-L20
The EP-5 uses a 3-blade 7.5-inch × 7-inch propeller and a 2.08:1 lower-unit gear ratio. Elco’s current specification confirms these values.
The lower unit also has an 8.5-ounce gear-oil capacity according to Elco’s technical specification.
Use compatible Elco propeller specifications when replacing the propeller. Diameter and pitch should not be considered in isolation because propeller selection affects acceleration, efficiency and load carrying.
Elco’s technical specification identifies manual trim and tilt for the EP-5.
Elco’s current product configuration also offers a Panther Model 40 electric trim-and-tilt kit as an optional accessory. The remote-controlled system allows the motor to be raised and lowered from the boat.
The EP-5 can be equipped with Elco’s DASH Bluetooth connector, allowing a compatible iOS or Android device to act as a digital dashboard. Elco states that the system can display important motor and battery information wirelessly.
An optional Elco NMEA 2000 Gateway can connect the motor to compatible marine navigation displays. Elco notes that the depth finder or chart plotter must support NMEA 2000 and that features can vary by display model.
Elco offers the Victron BMV-700 battery monitor as an option for the EP-5 system. A battery monitor calculates amp-hours consumed and state of charge while providing information about voltage and power consumption.
Battery monitoring is useful for electric propulsion because remaining operating time depends on energy consumption and battery state rather than a conventional fuel gauge.
Elco offers a pre-assembled EP-5 battery connection harness designed to simplify motor installation. The current product page specifies a 7-foot battery connection kit and states that the cables are sized according to the motor’s amp draw, with marine-grade fuse blocks and Anderson motor connectors.
Using correctly sized marine electrical components is important for a 24 V system capable of up to 125 A continuous current. Installation should follow Elco’s current documentation and the requirements of the selected battery system.
The EP-5 eliminates direct combustion exhaust from the motor and provides a quieter alternative to a conventional gasoline outboard. Elco specifically positions the model for clean cruising without the fuel-system requirements and hazards associated with gasoline propulsion.
This can make the EP-5 useful for small tenders, fishing, recreational boating and other applications where reduced engine noise and simple electric operation are priorities.
